A live WordPress demonstration showing how a static featured image becomes responsive, playable video without disrupting the native featured-image workflow.

Instead of displaying a normal static featured image, this post uses a playable vertical video directly inside the same featured-media space on the ACLTracks front page.
That is the core idea behind the plugin: keep the familiar WordPress featured-image workflow, but give publishers the option to present video where a theme would normally display the thumbnail.
From static image to playable video
ACL Featured Video lets an editor select a video from the WordPress Media Library or provide a direct video URL. An optional poster image appears before playback, giving the video a polished cover while keeping loading under control.
The current build supports:
- Playable featured video on posts
- WordPress Media Library selection
- Direct self-hosted video URLs
- Optional poster images
- Landscape, square, and vertical layouts
- Block themes and classic themes
- Single-post and archive-card presentation
- The original featured image as a fallback
The normal Featured Image field stays available. That image can continue serving contexts where video is not appropriate, including social previews, feeds, indexing surfaces, or themes and tools that expect a conventional thumbnail.
Built for different content shapes
The current version includes:
- 16:9 for widescreen content
- 1:1 for square cards and feeds
- 9:16 for vertical creator content
This demonstration uses 9:16 because ACLTracks displays posts in narrow three-column sections on desktop. The vertical format gives the video enough visual presence without shrinking it into a shallow strip.
Additional ratio options are planned as the plugin develops.
Why this exists
Featured images are useful, but they are still images inside an increasingly motion-driven web.
ACL Featured Video is being built for publishers, musicians, visual creators, product developers, tutorial makers, and anyone else who wants a post preview to do more than sit still.
No external video platform is required. No page-builder dependency is required. The goal is a focused WordPress tool that adds motion without replacing the native publishing system around it.
